Safe storage of gold jewelry is crucial if you want to keep it dazzling for a long time. However, another equally important aspect of keeping gold shimmering for years is cleaning it regularly. Unfortunately, as much as we all love to show them off, daily exposure to outside elements can affect the appearance and longevity of beautiful gold jewelry. The good news is, keeping gold jewelry in top condition is not difficult at all.
As long as the items do not contain any stones, you may use a homemade cleaning solution. Just mix warm water with a bit of mild phosphate-free soap or washing liquid. Although pure gold does not tarnish, the majority of gold jewelry is in fact an alloy of gold and other metals that could react to ingredients found in harsh chemicals, such as chlorine, therefore it is best to err on the side of caution and go for gentle and non-abrasive cleaning products. Soaking jewelry for some time is the best way to remove dirt and oils that can collect over time. After a while, use a cloth or very soft brush. If the design is more complex, a baby toothbrush with very soft bristles would be great, in order to remove all the remaining impurities. Once rinsed – under warm water – dry the pieces with another soft cloth or just let it air dry. Even though paper towels seem to be very soft, they can be quite damaging to the surface so it’d be better to leave them aside during for drying dishes ;)
The more sophisticated the design, the more care needs to be taken when cleaning each piece. Special care ir required when cleaning jewelry that contains precious or semi-precious stones -- they are often treated to enhance their colours. Consequently, the best course of action is to seek professional advice to avoid dulling or damaging the stones. Jewelry polishing cloths are great to bring some lost shine to the pieces due to the cleansing ingredients they are infused with. They are cheap and widely available and last for ages as long as they are not washed, which would cause the cleansing agent to be removed.
